Way back to last October, the French Embassy in Malta informed Chev. Prof. Laurent Seychell, ex-head of the department of French, that the French Republic intends to honour him with the rank of Officier for his unprecedented contribution to the French language and culture in Malta and abroad, among which the creation of an autonomous department in 1994 at the University of Malta and his numerous publications meant for both Maltese and foreign students, especially those speaking English countries.
The rank of Officier is the 2nd rank in a series of 5 created by Napol茅on Bonaparte whereby the former constitutes the highest rank foreigners can accede to. The first medal of Chevalier was bestowed on him 18 years ago for the same reasons.
