The U-Multirank survey results for 2019, based on 2017 data, were recently released internationally. U-Multirank, funded by the European Commission, is an innovative approach to international ranking of universities on a like-with-like basis, scoring all results into one out of five tiers. Unlike other international university league tables, it is driven by users rather than by private companies.
The University of Malta (UM) has participated in this exercise since 2015. The 2019 results indicate that UM has retained its 2018 gains and remains in the top rank with respect to timely graduation for its undergraduate programmes. It has also secured its fifth consecutive percentage increase in the number of international joint publications.
UM has also improved in a number of areas. It is now in the top rank with respect to the percentage of bachelor鈥檚 graduates working in the region. It has also achieved the fifth consecutive increase in scientific publications per year. The University has also improved its knowledge transfer capability, consistently improving its number of graduate companies for which it has retained its second tier achievement with respect to comparable universities. The University has also improved the percentage of timely graduation for its master鈥檚 programmes, moving up from third to second tier status.
On the other hand, UM has decreased its ranking in the following areas: external research income, co-publications with industrial partners, percentage of international academic staff (of total academic staff), and strategic research partnerships in the region.
In line with the vision of its Rector Prof. Alfred J. Vella, UM has largely retained the gains in its international orientation made in 2018. It has retained its high second-tier ranking with respect to student mobility. It has also improved its percentage of international doctoral level degrees.
U-Multirank compares the performances of universities in the five broad dimensions of university activity: (1) teaching and learning, (2) research, (3) knowledge transfer, (4) international orientation and (5) regional engagement. The U-Multirank web tool enables comparisons at the level of the university as a whole and at the level of specific fields of study. It allows users to develop their own personalised rankings by selecting indicators in terms of their own preferences. U-Multirank started in 2010 with 150 universities, and now includes data from 1,600 participating institutions.
