The Faculty of Theology at the University of Malta recently launched a publication entitled 'Contemporary Issues in Bioethics'. The book launch was held on 16 July 2019 at San Anton Palace, Attard, under the patronage of His Excellency the President of Malta.
The publication, edited by Rev. Professor Emmanuel Agius and Rev. Dr Raymond Zammit, comprises a collection of articles written by alumni who have graduated with a Master’s degree in Bioethics from the University of Malta. The book includes eight papers which cover a gamut of ethical concerns, ranging from anthropological issues, informed consent in shared decision-making, and the breaking of bad news to cancer patients; to artificial nutrition and hydration in end-of-life care, epigenetics, intersexuality, emergency contraceptives, and pharmacogenetics. Some of these bioethical issues are approached from a Maltese cultural angle while others are discussed from a global perspective.
During the book launch, Dr Anna Vella, Professor Godfrey LaFerla, Professor Jean Calleja Agius and His Excellency the President of Malta all shared their insights with the audience. They all praised the initiative taken by the Faculty of Theology to provide a platform to showcase and publish the students’ research findings.
The Dean of the Faculty of Theology, Rev. Dr John Berry, remarked that this publication is the first in a projected series that will offer to alumni of the Faculty of Theology the opportunity to demonstrate their research skills and their competence in specific contemporary bioethical issues.
The Faculty of Theology thanks CareMalta Group for sponsoring this publication.
