On the occasion of the International Nurses’ Day 2022, Ms Grace Jaccarini, former academic member and coordinator for nursing/midwifery studies at the University of Malta, made an interesting donation to the Faculty of Health Sciences.
This consists of a digitally printed copy of an album compiled by Ms Kathleen Crofton Sleigh, one of the first six nurses/midwives who came to Malta to offer district nursing services to the Maltese population through the Malta Memorial District Nursing Association (MMDNA). The MMDNA was established in 1947 as a War Memorial to the Maltese people who had suffered great hardship during World War II.
Kathleen Crofton Sleigh compiled the album from her personal photographs and cuttings from newspapers relating the early history of the MMDNA and adding personal notes that offer a glimpse of everyday life in Malta from 1947 to 1952. She died aged 100 years, and her son, Jim Galvin kindly brought the album to Malta.
Dr Catherine Sharples, faculty academic member and scholar of the History of Nursing in Malta, was also present for the presentation of the donated document.
