This year’s winners of StartUp of the Year Award at the Junior Achievement Young Enterprise (JAYE) national finals are FEMA students Borislav Dimitrov, Adam Borg Mercieca, and Kimberly Chiarenza with their start-up Plastopex.
Ircab, with FEMA team students Samwel Agius, Anthea Maria Gauci, Emma Mercieca and Jamil Schembri placed second. The start-up Spring, with the FEMA students, Anna Hauser, Matthea Borg, McAlister Azzopardi, Chloe Chun, Kylie Ciantar placed in third place. The team Spring also took home the HSBC ESG Sustainability Award & SWITCH Take Me to Market Award.
The start-up College Ltd and its FEMA students Benjamin Farrugia, Timothy Spiteri, Kristina Fino, Estelle Scicluna, Martina Fenech were presented the Camilleri Preziosi Customer Focus Award & Tech.mt Digital Innovation Award. Lastly, the JAYE Philip Bonnet Award for Perseverance recognised another FEMA student, Chris Mercieca, for his overall perseverance to his entrepreneurial spirit. Throughout the year, Chris showed an element of risk taking and dedication by participating in a range of opportunities within and beyond the JAYE programme.
The Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy (FEMA), Dr Emanuel Said, and the Head of the Management Department, Prof Vincent Cassar, strongly believe in forming an entrepreneurial ecosystem within higher education to promote a new generation of talented individuals and create a successful entrepreneurial culture. FEMA is proud to provide its students with opportunities to pursue their entrepreneurial ambitions both locally and internationally. Indeed, FEMA students have the opportunity to think outside the box through innovative lectures that work on the principle of theory complemented by insights into practice.
The 2022 national award winners FEMA students, with their start-up Plastopex, are now set to take part in multiple prestigious European competitions, including the JA European Enterprise Challenge, competing against approximately 15 other countries for the European title of ‘Start-up of the Year’. This year's edition is hosted and coordinated by JA Estonia as part of the European Entrepreneurship Festival, with the European Awards Night taking place on 14 July 2022 in the presence of Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, other European Commission representatives, and CEOs from companies such as Zego and Avanade, among others.
