Malta participates in the celebration of the with a video on the IUGS recognised heritage stone - the Lower Globigerina Limestone of the Maltese Islands.

The International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) is part of a global science community celebrating the first International Geodiversity Day (IGD). This is a worldwide celebration, bringing people together on October 6 each year, to promote the many aspects of geodiversity. International Geodiversity Day was proclaimed by UNESCO at the 41st General Conference in 2021.
The IUGS Sub-committee on Global Heritage Stone Resource (GHSR) is taking part in this celebration by making better known the heritage stones which have been recognised as a GHSR. The Lower Globigerina Limestone of the Maltese Islands was one of the first heritage stones to be so recognised, and as such a short video highlighting this stone at its best was prepared by Prof. JoAnn Cassar of the Department of Conservation & Built Heritage, Faculty for the Built Environment.
This can be found on the IUGS webpage which celebrates this international day, and which includes a broad selection of recorded and live material to engage audiences with the wonders of our geodiverse world. This webpage, including the video on the Maltese Lower Globigerina Limestone, can be found at .
