MetroSea represents an international forum during which researchers from around the world present their latest work related to the field of metrology for the marine environment. This year, the event was organised in Milazzo (Sicily) between 3 and 4 of October. Scientists from renowned institutions as well as Universities discussed issues related to measurement and instrumentation that require joint research for innovation.
During the conference, staff members from the Oceanography Malta Research Group (OMRG) as well as from the Seismic Monitoring & Research Group (SMRG), both within the Department of Geosciences of the Faculty of Science, presented what is being done on a local level as part of the i-waveNET and SIPOBED projects. i-WaveNet aims to implement an innovative monitoring network to integrate different measurement technologies that includes HF radars, microseism sensors, sea level probes, wave buoys, and weather stations. The OMRG will soon expand its operational monitoring network through the installation of a new sea-level station and two wave buoys around Malta.
The SIPOBED project deals with coastal erosion - a phenomenon of great importance to the Maltese Islands as the coast is one of the most intensely used and visited areas. The goal here is to use remote sensing techniques to detect and monitor movement of sediments within the Maltese pocket beaches.
The work being done by Dr Luca Piroddi, Mr Roland Pfeiffer (presenting BIOBLU results), and Ms Zakie Hiba Wazaz, was also presented. MetroSea 2023 will be organised by the University of Malta. Prof. Sebastiano D’Amico, Prof. Alan Deidun, Prof Aaron Micallef Dr Anthony Galea, and Dr Adam Gauci will act as the local organizing committee
