The XIth Mediterranean Emergency Medicine Congress, MEMC22, sponsored in collaboration with the Mediterranean Academy of Emergency Medicine (MAEM), was organised in Malta 21-24 September 2022. The conference attracted over 500 world renowned Emergency Medicine physicians and Toxicologists to Malta including Dr. Petra Khoury Director, Health and Care Department, World Health Organization and Dr. Vikas Kapil, Director for Science & Chief Medical Officer, Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, GA, United States. Mr Mark Lawrence Zammit, member of the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics was a member of the scientific committee.

University Pro-Rector, Prof. Joseph M Cacciottolo and Mr Clarence Pace, Director General (Health Care ¸£ÀûÔÚÏßÃâ·Ñ) from the Ministry for Health were invited to open the conference. Prof Janet Mifsud, Mr Mark Lawrence Zammit, Dr Robert Chircop and Dr Jeffrey Bonnici, all members of the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics contributed to the pre-congress workshop ‘Tox in the box’. Mr Zammit was also invited to give and excellent plenary talk on ‘Toxicological Deaths in History’ while Dr Chircop and Dr Bonnici delivered oral presentations on their areas of research as Consultants i/c of the Malta Poisons Centre, during the main conference sessions.
The conference provided an excellent and unique opportunity for final year University of Medical students, trainees in Emergency Medicine and MSc Pharmaco toxicology students to network with top experts in the area, especially in view of the importance being given to toxicology in Malta with the opening of the new Malta National Poisons Centre and the new Masters in Pharmaco toxicology being offered by the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, University of Malta.
