Following Professor Attard鈥檚 nomination by colleagues in the Faculty of Laws and on the recommendation of the University Honours Committee and Senate, Council at its last meeting agreed to bestow upon Professor Attard the prestigious status of Senior Fellow of the University of Malta. This honour was in recognition for his long and continuous active service to the Faculty of Laws and the University, in particular, his contribution as a founding member of the Department of International Law. The appointment was also in recognition of his international standing as a scholar and peer in international law.
The photo was taken at a reception given by the ITLOS President to launch two volumes of the IMLI Manual on International Maritime Law at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea Headquarters in Hamburg. The first dealing with law of the sea issues and the second dealing with shipping law matters. These two volumes were subsequently complemented by a third volume dealing with maritime security and marine environmental protection. The Manuals, to which a number of leading academics contributed, is published by Oxford University Press. The Manuals have become essential reference material for students, researchers, academics and practitioners. The book launch was attended by international judges, academics and diplomats.
