Dr Gabrielle Zammit, an academic member of staff from the Department of Biology, was invited to participate at a conference held at the University of Cádiz in Spain during September. The conference, titled ‘Seawheat: From fundamental biology to aquaculture: state-of-the-art, bottlenecks and gaps’ ) , was organised and funded through the COST Action CA20106 ‘Tomorrow’s Wheat of the Sea: Ulva, A model for an innovative mariculture’.
Apart from an invitation to present research that is currently ongoing at the University of Malta, Dr Zammit was also asked to Chair the session ‘Bioactive products and associated microorganisms’, that elucidated the Ulva microbiome and associated health-promoting biomolecules. Dr Zammit's oral presentation ‘Sustained growth in culture of barcoded Ulva spp. germlings for bioprocessing’ was concerned with the growth of Maltese Ulva spp. strains to improve nutrition and health. The research, conducted at the Laboratory of Applied Phycology of the Centre for Molecular Medicine and Biobanking, is funded via the Research Excellence Programme 2022 of the Malta Council for Science & Technology, through the project ‘GreASE: Green Algae to Solve Emerging problems in food security’.
