A Memorandum of Understanding agreement between the University of Malta and the Ministry for Education, Sports, Youth, Research and Innovation has been signed on 12 October 2022. This agreement will help the University to conduct further innovations which will contribute towards the manufacturing industry for plastic.
Present for this agreement were the University Rector, Prof Alfred J. Vella, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Matthew Vella, representing the Faculty of Economics, Management and accountancy were Dr Stephanie Fabri and Prof. Vincent Cassar. Minister Hon. Clifton Grima and Parliamentary Secretary Hon. Keith Azzopardi Tanti was also present at this event.
The project being financed by the Ministry is called “Enhancing Innovation in Manufacturing: Engineering of Plastics in Malta and Poland" and it will focus on the engineering industry both in Malta and in Poland. Through this agreement the students from the Bachelor of Commerce will have the opportunity to take part in this research in order to analyse data provided by the World Economic Forum and the European Union to identify solutions and opportunities for this sector.
The aim of this project is to deliver new methods of integrating human resources and engineering systems when manufacturing plastics, the results will then be compared to Poland’s industry. Researchers, engineers and scientists will evaluate the data gathered and work on recommendations in manufacturing plastics combined with innovative solutions.

The University Rector said “I look forward to seeing the outcomes from this innovative research at the University of Malta and we are delighted to collaborate with Poland. The results extracted from this research will provide recommendations and alternative solutions towards the engineering and manufacturing of plastics. I am certain that such research will further enhance academic studies within the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy as well as providing an opportunity to our students enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce. The University of Malta is very thankful for the funding provided by the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation.â€
Minister Clifton Grima praised this initiative and he encouraged further collaborations as such which will lead to more innovative solutions. “It is very important to keep on investing in research, as it will make a difference in the way we live. Through this collaboration with the University of Malta we can ensure that the industry in Malta will be more productive and which will help other sectors with the results obtained.â€
Parliamentary secretary, Keith Azzopardi Tanti said that “This agreement is the first step towards building a more innovative and well researched industry. I look forward to seeing more students studying in research and innovation at the University of Malta.â€
