Prof. Vince Briffa was invited to deliver a Lectio Magistralis at the Accademia di Belle Arti of Catania. The presentation, which was hosted by the Scuola di Cinema of the same Accademia was entitled Living In-Between, and centred on the importance of conceptually-driven art practice. Prof. Briffa showed examples from his own multi-disciplinary and cross-mediatic art practice to highlight the fact that a contemporary practice in the visual arts can be multi-faceted, and include the engagement with a range of materials and media, both traditional as well as electronic and digital.
The session was introduced by Prof. Lina Scalisi and Prof. Gianni Latino, president and director of the Accademia respectively. Prof. Gianpiero Vincenzo and Prof. Alessandro Aiello, both practicing artists, curators and lecturers at the Accademia, provided further contextualisation on the subject and also conducted the Q&A session with the general public and students that followed both in person and online.
The Lectio Magistralis was also used as a platform to launch the Accademia鈥檚 Experimenta Film Festival, where OUTLAND, a videoart work by Prof. Briffa which was first screened as an installation at the Maltese Pavilion of the 2019 Venice Art Biennale was screened at the launching of the festival on the same day.
Prof. Vince Briffa is a member of the Department of Digital Arts, Faculty of Media & Knowledge Sciences (MAKS) at the University of Malta.
