The ) within the hosted of between the 14 and 15 June 2023. As part of the continuous development of both academic and technical staff of DMME, Mr Harvey delivered two training sessions on the heat treatment of tool steels.
Mr Harvey, a chartered engineer, is currently the group technical and quality manager of Voestalpine High Performance Metals UK Ltd. Mr Harvey has vast experience in the field of tool steels and has occupied various positions within Voestalpine (13 years) and Bohler (6 years).
The properties of tool steels depend on their manufacturing technology; composition - the carbon content and the amount and type of alloying elements; and heat treatment condition. The range of tool steel grades coupled with different heat treatment conditions provide for a wide range of tooling application requirements in terms of strength, toughness, wear, corrosion and high temperature resistance.
Locally, tool steels are used frequently by the manufacturing industry to produce moulds for plastic injection. DMME has close collaboration with local industry and provides heat treatment services to Maltese companies that are end of users of tool steels. This CPD will benefit further the academia-industry service provided by the DMME and the quality of lectures delivered to the Engineering students of the University of Malta.
