Prof. Timmy Gambin, from the Department of Classics & Archaeology, recently participated in a conference on new technologies in maritime archaeology held in Rabat, Morocco. The conference served as a platform for international experts from various backgrounds to share their research and innovative practices in the field. Gambin's presentation focused on novel approaches to the management of underwater cultural heritage, specifically highlighting the effective strategies employed in Malta.
Gambin's presentation focused on the challenges and opportunities involved in managing and preserving underwater archaeological sites. With Malta's rich maritime past, Gambin highlighted the techniques used by his team to protect and showcase the Islands’ underwater cultural heritage. Attendees were engaged as he explained the use of advanced technologies such as Automated Underwater Vehicles and specialised sonar sensors precise site identification and documentation.
Moreover, Gambin emphasised the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in maritime archaeology. By working closely with experts from diverse scientific fields, Gambin and his team are able to gain a comprehensive understanding of the synergies that exist between historic shipwrecks and their surrounding environment. This holistic approach enriched their findings and facilitated a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness between history and nature.
Gambin's presentation stimulated discussion among fellow archaeologists and researchers. Together with others, Gambin is set to explore possible avenues of collaboration to facilitate the adoption of similar approaches by others. All in all, the meeting provided valuable insights and encouraged attendees to continue working together towards the preservation and exploration of our shared maritime heritage.
