The University of Malta Maritime Platform (UMP), represented by as Chairperson of UMP, made a significant intervention at the MMF-ESG Event held on 26 May 2023. The event, organised by the Malta Maritime Forum (MMF), focused on exploring the alignment of the Maltese Maritime Sector with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) commitments.
As Chairman of the MMF, Mr Godwin Xerri’s opening to the event, paved the way to an engaging ESG discussion and was followed by prominent speakers from the maritime sector who included Perit Karmenu Vella, former EU Commissioner, and Dr Roberta Lepre, from Weave Consulting.
Following the introductory talks, a panel of experts convened to discuss various issues related to ESG and the best approach to addressing them within the local maritime sector. The panel (photo above) consisted of Dr Kathrin Kutlescha, Manager of Sustainability Advisory at EY Malta; Prof. Adriana Vella, Chair of the UMP; Mr Clint Flores, Head ESG Bank of Valletta; and Mr Joseph FX Zahra, Economist and Director of Surge Advisory.
The interventions of Prof. Vella focused on the role of UMP toward addressing the urgent ESG needs and highlighted the significance of knowledge evolution and advancement in the maritime sector. She stressed on the need for professionals in the industry to upgrade their skill set and understanding of the integrative requirements to achieve ESG targets. Prof. Vella emphasised that the UMP is well-positioned to offer essential support by guiding relevant training for current and future personnel desirable in this evolving sector and by fostering collaborative research, and innovation through its diverse membership at the University of Malta.
Prof. Vella emphasised how UMP is committed to identify and build opportunities for closer ties between academia and the Maltese maritime industry. Education at all levels and increased awareness were also deemed crucial in achieving ESG targets, thereby creating an informed and skilled society and workforce. The other panellists shared their experiences and views on pushing forward with national ESG commitments, acknowledging the demands and efforts required. However, they all agreed that the expertise already present in Malta does serve as a driving force, assisting numerous stakeholders in the maritime sector. The MMF, as emphasised in the concluding remarks by Mr Godwin Xerri, remains committed to providing a valuable forum for discussion and learning, vital to reaching ESG targets.
The UMP is a leading cross-cutting academic initiative dedicated to fostering collaboration, research, and education in the maritime sector. The latter being and expected to remain one of Malta’s key economic performers.
