The Department of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Malta, partnered up with the Metropolia University of Applied Sciences in Finland (Coordinator University for the programme), Artevelde University of Applied Sciences in Belgium, Polytechnic Institute of Setubal in Portugal, and Institut et Haute Ecole de la Sant茅 La Source in Lausanne, Switzerland. Together, they organized an titled "Emergencies in Acute Nursing." This innovative programme was launched during the second semester of 2024. BIPs are short, intensive programmes, consisting of blended learning methodology, that employs innovative teaching and learning methods, including online collaboration that integrates virtual learning with a physically intensive one-week session of face-to-face learning.
The primary goal of this study unit was to deepen students' understanding of various medical emergencies and enhance their ability to manage critical situations in acute nursing settings. It provided a platform for students to discuss and compare different patient care practices across the participating countries: Malta, Finland, Portugal, and Switzerland.
The programme consisted of two parts. From 16 January to 12 March, 2024, virtual educational sessions were conducted by lecturers from the participating universities for approximately 30 enrolled students. The second part of the BIP, which took place from 15 to 19, April 2024, concluded with an in-person week in Metropolia University, Helsinki, in Finland. Six students from the Department of Nursing, Malta, travelled to Metropolia University, Helsinki, Finland to attend the intensive week. Students and lecturers from different countries met to engage in a week-long exchange of ideas, enriched by cultural activities. There was an emphasis on simulation learning, providing a safe and engaging environment for students to practice their critical thinking skills.
