Rev. Dr Joseph Borg, a Visiting Senior Lecturer at the Department of Media & Communications within the University of Malta’s Faculty of Media & Knowledge Sciences, is one of eight international media experts who have been appointed by the Vatican to study the Catholic Church’s mission in a digital environment.
He was appointed to one of 10 study groups that emerged as a result of the synod’s first assembly that took place last October.
One of the 20 chapters in the synod’s synthesis document was dedicated to the church’s mission in the digital environment, and it proposed the creation of collaborative networks of digital missionaries.
Following this, Pope Francis decided that some of the controversial issues (such as women deacons, the involvement of laypeople in choices of bishops, and a greater acceptance of LGBTQ+ Catholics) raised at the first assembly of the Synod of Bishops will be examined by study groups.
These groups are expected to finalise their work by June 2025.
The study group to which Rev. Dr Borg was appointed is being coordinated by the Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication that is headed by Mgr Lucio Ruiz.
Rev. Dr Borg has been active in the media for almost 50 years and was responsible for the local church’s media policy document, titled ‘The Digital Face of the Lord’.
He also chaired the Public Broadcasting ¸£ÀûÔÚÏßÃâ·Ñ editorial board and headed the University of Malta’s Campus 103.7 station. He currently chairs the .
