In a brief occasion held recently at the Valetta Campus, University of Malta academic, Dr David Fabri presented a copy of his recently published book on the law of companies and co-operatives to the Rector, Prof. Alfred J. Vella, who serves as the Chairman of the Malta University Holding Company and its related companies.
A copy was also presented to Dr Angele Attard Chetcuti, the head of the University's Legal Office, who also acts as board secretary to the same companies.
The book examines recent developments in modern Maltese Company law, and in particular it examines how the Companies Act 1995 came about and why.
As a principal co-drafter of that Act, the author was well placed to reveal the background to that voluminous Act and to reflect on the changing face of company law.
The book includes detailed discussions on company directors, the office of chairman and the board secretary, the company auditors, the evolving role of the Registrar of Companies, and on recent court decisions. A chapter also analyses the Co-operative Societies Act 2001 and compares in detail the co-operative society and the limited liability company model.
This publication is the second in a series of Studies in Maltese Regulation and it follows the first book which dealt with regulation and financial services.
The third book will analyse the development of Maltese consumer law and policy.
Dr Fabri LL.D., Ph.D. (Melit) has lectured at University since 1994 and is currently Visiting Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Laws.
