The current President of the European Parliament and University of Malta alumna (of the Faculty of Laws), Dr Roberta Metsola was awarded an Honoris Causa Doctorate in recognition of her academic, scientific and professional merit in the field of International Relations from the University of Lisbon.

Her nomination was presented by Prof. Carla Margarida Barroso Guapo da Costa, who spoke of the relevance Dr Metsola brought to the representation of a small country within European institutions. He also referred to her work in favour of increased gender equality, as she shares essential values with her predecessors.

Dr Metsola spoke about her responsibility to continue responding on behalf of Europe. “I believe in Europe and in the power of the people to change lives and shape the future”, she said at the ceremony.
