It would be cliché to say that false and misleading information is becoming a bigger problem. We often think of disinformation as a faceless abstraction working in the shadows of social media. In truth, it’s sometimes as overt as a billboard.
An engaging new series of reports is highlighting disinformation narratives in Malta, Greece and Cyprus. The Malta reports, which are being produced by the Department of Media and Communications, have so far looked at , that have spread locally , and claims that are symptomatic of attempts to whitewash the dire state of the country’s . Upcoming reports focus on other timely issues.
These publications form part of the activities of MedDMO, the Mediterranean Digital Media Observatory, which is an EU-funded project bringing together journalists, media literacy experts and researchers from Malta, Greece and Cyprus – as well as the AFP – who work to foster a healthier information space in the Mediterranean and beyond. The University of Malta is a partner in the project through its Department of Media and Communications.
