Jarrid, whose research focuses on building a comprehensive database of desalination capacity, Offshore Freshened Groundwater (OFG) occurrences, and hydrocarbon infrastructure across EU COST member countries, was hosted by , research fellow at the UM and Chairman of OFF-SOURCE.
The visit was facilitated by Malta’s Energy and Water Agency and guided by veteran engineer Ronald Pace, who shared his vast experience in desalination technologies and their critical role in supplying potable water to the Maltese Islands. Joining Ariel and Jarrid was , OFF-SOURCE Grant Manager, further strengthening the collaboration between key stakeholders.
During the tour, the team explored the technical operation of the Għar Lapsi plant and discussed the potential integration of OFG as a supplementary feedwater source. This concept offers promising possibilities for reducing desalination costs and improving its efficiency, particularly in water-stressed coastal regions like Malta. The discussions highlighted how OFF-SOURCE’s mission to investigate OFG as a feasible resource could align with Malta’s existing water infrastructure, promoting sustainable water management practices.
The site visit not only provided valuable insights into Malta’s desalination capabilities but also underscored the collaborative efforts of OFF-SOURCE in bridging academic research with real-world applications in water resource management.
