University Seed Funds made possible a collaboration between Associate Prof. Doreen Spiteri from the Department of Languages and Humanities Education, in the Faculty of Education, three teachers in the early stages of their career - Roberta Darmenia, Jessica Meli, Jana Vella - and Pamela Zerafa an experienced teacher and Education Officer for English.
The collaboration resulted in a self-access resource consisting of worksheets intended to help learners of science in years 7 and 8 to handle the English language demands of their science textbooks. Cognisant of the fact that such textbooks are meant for first language users of English, the group brought to bear their teaching skills to devise tasks and exercises that support learners' comprehension of science material as well as their writing up of laboratory reports and experiments. The worksheets can be used as a flipped classroom strategy or post-lesson to consolidate the learning.
The resource was presented to representatives from the Education Directorates with a view to making the resource freely available to all schools.
UM Rector, Prof. Alfred J. Vella, and Pro-Rectors Prof. Ing. Simon G. Fabri and Prof. Valerie Sollars were present for the occasion.
