Students from the Master of Science in Applied Oceanography programme at the University of Malta recently participated in a research visit to the University of Cadiz. This exchange, facilitated by the SEA-EU alliance, aimed to promote academic and research collaborations in marine and environmental sciences while exposing local students to leading institutions and state-of-the-art research facilities.
The visit provided an excellent opportunity for students to network with peers and professionals in oceanography, hydrography, and geophysics. The itinerary, spanning from 13 to 16 February, included visits to prominent institutions such as the University Institute for Marine Research (INMAR) that is renowned for its focus on coastal and marine environmental studies, and the Instituto Hidrogr谩fico de la Marina (IHM) that is a prestigious centre for hydrographic and oceanographic research. Students also visited the Real Instituto y Observatorio de la Armada, a historic institution contributing to astronomy, geophysics, and navigation.
During their time in C谩diz, the Maltese students were joined by others following a similar master鈥檚 programme. This enabled them to exchange ideas and initiate plans for joint projects, laying the groundwork for future partnerships that will strengthen ties between the universities and advance research excellence across Europe鈥檚 maritime regions.
The visits to the various institutes were organised Prof. Javier Benavente Gonzalez, Prof. Alfredo Izquierdo Gonzalez, Prof. Tomas Fernandez Momblant, Prof. Jesus Gomez Enri and Rafael Ma帽anes from the Departments of Earth Sciences and Applied Physics at the University of Cadiz. The Maltese group was accompanied by Dr Adam Gauci, Ms Audrey Zammit, and Mr David Ramirez.
The MSc in Applied Oceanography programme at the University of Malta is designed to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in applied oceanography. For further information, one can contact the programme coordinator, Prof. Alan Deidun.
