Prof. Isabel Stabile has made history as the first Maltese recipient of the annual , an award presented by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The gynaecologist and human rights activist was honoured for her outstanding commitment to ensuring access to education, contraceptives, healthcare, and adequate support systems for women.
The award was presented to Prof. Stabile by Dutch Ambassador, Djoeke Adimi-Koekkoek.
Established in 2008, the Human Rights Tulip is an annual recognition by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, aimed at supporting human rights defenders worldwide who stand up for vulnerable groups, expose human rights violations and demand justice.
The Dutch Embassy highlighted that Prof. Stabile has faced significant personal risks, including threats and physical assault, as a result of her advocacy.
Notably, in 2022, she was physically shoved and verbally harassed by an individual while holding a roadside placard in support of women鈥檚 rights in Malta and their agency over their reproductive health.
This prestigious award serves as a testament to Prof. Stabile鈥檚 dedication and relentless efforts to promote and defend human rights, particularly for women, in Malta.
