At the University of Malta, cultural diversity isn’t just a concept — it’s a lived experience. With students from 136 nationalities, our campus is a truly global classroom, where every lecture, conversation, and collaboration is enriched by a wide range of cultural perspectives. This dynamic mix of backgrounds and experiences shapes our university environment, fostering openness, inclusion, and growth.
Our international community is reflected in the diverse origins of our students. Among the top five countries represented are Italy, India, Germany, Poland, and the United States, showing the far-reaching appeal of UM’s academic programmes and vibrant campus life. In fact, 25% of our student body is international, a statistic that underlines the global nature of our institution. These students bring more than just geographical variety — they contribute language, traditions, ideas, and new ways of thinking that help the entire UM community evolve.
Cultural exchange at UM isn’t limited to full-time students. UM welcomes 591 incoming Erasmus students, adding another layer to our multicultural environment.
What makes UM’s celebration of diversity so special is that it’s not just seen — it’s shared. We celebrate language, traditions, music, dance, food, history, and — most importantly — ideas. It’s through this rich blend that we build bridges, spark dialogue, and grow stronger as a united academic community.
On World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, Wednesday 21 May, we honour the many cultures that make UM more than just a place to study — they make it a place to connect, to belong, and to thrive.
