On Tuesday 17 June 2025, a group of 15 students from Verdala International School visited the labs at the Faculty of Engineering and got a glimpse of the research projects taking place at the Faculty.
From developing sustainable energy systems to building autonomous vehicles and advanced robotics, engineering is at the forefront of shaping our future. The University of Malta’s Faculty of Engineering provides students with hands-on experience, access to cutting-edge research, and strong links to industry – preparing graduates for high-demand careers both locally and internationally.
Among the spots they visited were the Industrial and Manufacturing Lab at ERIL, the Vision & Robotics Lab, the Electrical Engineering Lab, the Electronics Lab, the Metallurgy and Materials Lab, the Solid Mechanics Lab and the .
The visit formed part of UM’s broader commitment to promoting STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) education among younger generations. Various faculties and research centres at UM regularly collaborate with schools and educational institutions to offer engaging, hands-on experiences aimed at sparking curiosity and encouraging future careers in STEM. These include lab tours, public science lectures, summer programmes, outreach visits, and student competitions such as the Malta Robotics Olympiad and the Junior Science Café series.
The following day, the same students will attend an event called ‘Career Chats’ at their own school, where they will be able to have one-on-one conversations with several members of the UM STEAM Community, and others – with the aim of inspiring their future career choices. During these chats, Mr Roderick Abdilla is representing the Faculty of Science, whereas and Prof. Janet Mifsud are representing the Department of Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics.
