After the successful visit to CERN back in 2009, engageSTREAM, in collaboration with the University of Malta, is proud to once again offer the opportunity to 24 Physics or Chemistry teachers / lecturers / other interested individuals working in STEM to visit the European Organization for European Research at CERN, located in Geneva, Switzerland. CERN is the world鈥檚 largest and most extensive particle physics laboratory.
The aim of the visit is for familiarisation with the world鈥檚 largest scientific research centre and the work currently being carried out at the centre, and to meet some of the scientists working at the centre. The research carried out at CERN focuses on finding out what the Universe is made of and how it came to be.
The most complex scientific instruments are used to study the basic constituents of matter: the fundamental particles. By studying what happens when these particles collide, physicists learn about the laws of Nature. .
The programme is specific for Maltese individuals and includes lectures by prominent scientists about various aspects of particle physics, visits to the Microcosm, the Atlas Control Room, the CSM service cavern, SM-18 (where tests of the elements of the LHC take place), the low energy ion ring, the anti-matter factory, other facility halls and data centres. It also includes group work and a social event. Participants will be given a certificate of attendance at the end of the course.
