Contributions from artists and sustainability activists are being sought for a new book to be published by called Art, Sustainability and Learning Communities: Call to Action, Edited by Raphael Vella (University of Malta) and Victoria Pavlou (Frederick University).
The book will show how shared spaces for exchange in the fields of art education and learning communities can reflect, inspire and integrate sustainability principles that are so crucial in today鈥檚 world.
It will explore the activist potential of artistic practices and art education by presenting literature in relevant fields (visual arts education, education for sustainable development, contemporary art), examining the development of professional learning communities and presenting concrete approaches to infuse sustainability challenges into art education.
The publication aims to promote a sense of coordinated action, community, lifelong learning and confidence in the possibility of changing current conditions. It will do this in three book sections that combine expertise in visual arts education, education for sustainable development, contemporary art practice and sustainability activism.
A call is being issued for contributions for a final third part which will present brief and illustrated case studies or statements of contemporary artists, sustainability leaders and activists whose works and ideas can inspire others, including artists and educators in their everyday work.
Contributions can focus on any of the following topics:
- How can artists and sustainability activists engage with different stakeholders in the fields of education and culture to develop effective learning communities?
- How can education be reconceptualised through innovative approaches to higher education and community-based learning?
- How can contemporary artistic practices contribute to the strengthening of local communities, climate justice, social justice and sustainability initiatives in different contexts?
- How can artists influence sustainable development policy?
Contributions will be peer-reviewed and should be 1500-2500 words in length and include a maximum of 4 images.
All abstracts are to be sent via email as word files.
Images (300 dpi) are likely to be printed in black and white, so photographs with a good contrast are preferable.
