A Master of Science by Research position is available within the Department of Communications & Computer Engineering in the Faculty of ICT, in collaboration with CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research.
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN is presently the world鈥檚 biggest and highest energy particle accelerator. It collides beams of protons or heavy ions to study the fundamental elements of matter and our Universe. After a shutdown period, the LHC is now preparing the restart operation at even higher beam luminosity.
The LHC has thousands of beam instrumentation devices, such as beam loss monitors and beam position monitors, which are used to ensure that the machine is operated safely and within its operational parameters. A large number of signals are also recorded from the various machine subsystems, such as magnets and collimators.
The selected candidate will be working in conjunction with the Beams department at CERN to develop algorithms to form part of a data analysis tool which allows physicists to monitor the machine鈥檚 performance over time. The use of machine learning techniques for anomaly detection and prediction will be explored within this M.Sc. The ideal candidate would have a background in signal processing and/or machine learning, as well as knowledge of programming languages such as Python or MATLAB.
Interested candidates should get in touch with Dr Gianluca Valentino by Friday 5 November 2021.
