The University of Malta – through the – is currently involved in an Erasmus+ project called Skill-UP. This is a three-year project which started in 2020 and includes twelve partners from five countries: Portugal, Italy, France, Malta and Turkey.
Since the beginning of the project, the Skill-UP consortium was forced to conduct all of its activities and meetings online due to the pandemic; however, this October, following a reduction in the number of COVID cases and the easing of travel restrictions, the consortium was finally able to organise a physical plenary meeting in Malta. This meeting was hosted by the University of Malta at the and its purpose was to give the partners an overview of the project; to present the status of each work package; and to discuss the remaining activities of the project.
One of the objectives of the project has been to develop training programmes to equip aviation professionals with the knowledge and skills required to cope with future aviation scenarios, including single pilot operations and remote/digital tower operations. In fact, the consortium has developed eight training programmes which are currently being piloted with end users, including air traffic controllers, airline pilots, drone pilots and airport operators. Following the end of the project, these programmes will be made available to the general public for free.
Skill-UP will come to an end in March 2023 with a public event which is planned to take place in Portugal.
