Book of the month - October 2018Hospitaller Malta and the Mediterranean Economy in the Sixteenth Century by Dr Joan Abela
This recently published book, by Dr Joan Abela, explores the economic development of Malta and the Mediterranean during the period when Malta was ruled by the Knights of St John. The book places a focus on how Malta was the centre of a vast trading network with the participation of Christians, Jews and Muslims. The book also includes an interesting chapter on the role of women in commercial activities. Related illustrations, charts, maps and tables can also be found in this well-researched book.
The list of new Melitensia accessions is available on the Library website.

News from our Acquisitions Department
The Library Acquisitions Department is mainly responsible for purchasing new books for the Main library and its branches. The Acquisitions department’s mission is to allocate its budget in the most effective manner by working hand in hand with academic members of staff in order to enhance the collection by supporting the teaching and research programmes at UM.When a new book is received, the Acquisitions department enters the book’s basic bibliographic details in the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC). This process is referred to as the 'accessioning' of books. Books are then catalogued and placed on the shelves.
