Special Collections news
The UM Library has recently received a small portrait in oils of the late art historian Dr Edward Sammut (1912-1984) executed in 1952 by his friend Maltese artist Willie Apap (1918-1970).
By means of a few swift brushstrokes laid on with brush and thumb and with clever use made of the priming of the canvas to add depth, the artist captures an excellent likeness of the sitter, which is both fresh in execution and insightful.
The portrait, which was exhibited in the 1984 exhibition 'Homage to Willie Apap (1918-1970): an exhibition of paintings and drawings' (the catalogue to the exhibition was, in fact, drawn up by Dr Edward Sammut) has been generously donated to the University of Malta Library through the Estate of Dr Edward Sammut and received with our grateful thanks.
