Open Access Fact of the Month
The term 'Open Access' was first coined only in the early 2000s, by the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI). The initiative, publicly released on 14 February 2002, represents the very first major international statement which recognized the importance of providing free and unrestricted access to the research literature and defined Open Access and its principles. BOAI was followed by the Bethesda Statement on Open Access Publishing in April 2003 and the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities in October 2003 that expanded on it by specifying how authors and researchers are to enact Open Access and further supporting the core principles.
