Space Research Grant - WaterColours, Dr Adam Gauci
A new canvas for high-resolution Chlorophyll-a and Total Suspended Matter products from satellite data.
Space Research Grant - EO4HBCS - Professor JoAnn Cassar
The research project entitled ‘Earth Observation for Historic Building Conservation and Sustainability’ (EO4HBCS) is being coordinated by the Department of Conservation and Built Heritage Department of the Faculty for the Built Environment and by the Institute of Earth Systems, with the support of Heritage Malta and the Restoration Directorate. Lead researchers are Prof. JoAnn Cassar and Dr Charles Galdies.
The project will be using a combination of Earth Observation data and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) aerial reconnaissance, utilising various remote sensing techniques and imagery data obtained from sensors mounted on low-cost UAV platforms, fused with high resolution multispectral satellite imagery. In addition, in situ measurements of chosen historical buildings will be carried out. This study of the behaviour of traditional unmodified roofs (built of limestone slabs on arches or beams, and with a lime-based 'deffun' coating), traditional modified roofs (with insulation, membranes, etc), and modern roofs, will be a first in Malta, and will promote this as a possible test-bed for the many types of similar structures elsewhere in the wider Mediterranean Basin. Monitoring the temperature and related (moisture) parameters of these roofs will help understand the effects of modern 'adaptations' on general building behaviour, primarily in the upper storey, and on occupant well-being. Thus, thermal and other EO data will be used for the first time to quantify an effect which has for centuries been felt and appreciated by the occupants of such buildings, and to be able to present these data to decision-makers, conservation architects and users of such buildings.
Open Calls
The Erasmus+ 2020 call proposals has now been published! Erasmus+ is the main funding programme for the Education of the EU. The programme is split into 3 Key Actions:
Key Action 1 - Learning mobility of individuals:
Mobility of individuals in the field of education, training and youth
These projects include student and staff mobility within programme (EU countries) and between programme and partner countries (non-EU countries). Annual proposals are handled by the UM international office, whereby staff are invited to apply for teaching and training mobilities.
Key Action 2 - Cooperation for innovation and the exchange of good practices:
Knowledge Alliances
These foster innovation in and through higher education together with businesses, and beyond, contributing to new approaches to teaching and learning, entrepreneurship in education, and the modernisation of higher education systems in Europe.
Deadline: 26 February 2020 at 17:00 (Brussels time)
Internal deadline for submission to RSSD for review & signatures: 26 January 2020
Sector Skills Alliances
These tackle skills gap and ensure a better alignment of vocational education and training with labour market needs. There are opportunities to modernise VET, exchange knowledge and best practices, encourage working abroad, and increase the recognition of qualifications.
Deadline: 26 February 2020 at 17:00 (Brussels time)
Internal deadline for submission to RSSD for review & signatures: 26 January 2020
Key Action 3 - Support for policy reform
Jean Monnet activities
Opportunities for teaching, research, and policy debate on the EU and its policies.
Deadline: 20 February 2020 at 17:00 (Brussels time)
Internal deadline for submission to RSSD for review & signatures: 20 January 2020
Sport activities
These aim to support European partnerships on grassroots sport in order to pursue several objectives.
Deadline: 2 April 2020 at 17:00 (Brussels time)
Internal deadline for submission to RSSD for review and signatures: 2 March 2020

COST creates spaces where scientists are in the driving seat (bottom-up) and ideas can grow through a flexible and open approach. By enabling researchers from academia, industry and the public and private sector to work together in open networks that transcend borders, COST helps to advance science, stimulates knowledge sharing and pools resources.
COST Action is a network dedicated to scientific collaboration, complementing national research funds. COST Actions are:
- open to researchers and innovators;
- collaborating in a field of science and technology of common interest to at least seven COST Members/Cooperating Members;
- based on a joint work programme lasting four years;
- answering to the COST Open Call for proposals.
