Best practices at Universities
The International Sustainable Campus Network has just announced the winners of its 2021 awards.
At Covenant University (Nigeria), the Enactus project 'Pet-City' is a social enterprise that tackles the problem of plastic waste, marine litter and micro plastic pollution, transforming single-use plastic and nylon waste into cost-effective, sustainable materials. The University of Leeds Living Lab, saw a collaborative approach to biodiversity monitoring. The University used the campus as a test bed for innovative student-led research. The National University of Singapore aims to have Zero Waste Precincts by 2030 with a high diversion rate and the aspiration to inspire the country. Students lead by test-bedding scalable zero waste interdisciplinary solutions.
In Ireland, the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology also received an honorary award. The idea is to support ongoing efforts to embed sustainability more holistically across the Institute. Their initiative facilitates learning pathways for both staff and students to transition from sustainability literacy to sustainability leadership through the lens of the Sustainable Development Goals. A SDGs curriculum mapping exercise will perform an institutional programme review commencing in September 2021, the transition of their Education for Sustainability module to a fully online format, the establishment of a Sustainability Hub on the staff and student internal Share-Drive; the completion of a micro-course on ‘Introduction to Sustainability and the SDGs’ for all first-year students and new staff; Sustainability Train-the-Trainer workshops and micro-grants of EUR 1,000.
