Zoom client update
We encourage all staff to upgrade the Zoom client to the latest version. Having updated versions of the Zoom client will enable you to make use of the new features listed below. Step-by-step instructions to update your Zoom client [PDF] are available.
Focus mode
The Focus mode [PDF] feature enables the meeting hosts and co-hosts to view all the participants’ videos without other participants seeing each other.
When the lecturer (the host) or any participant with co-host privileges enables the Focus mode, the students can see their own video, the host’s and co-hosts' videos, the screens shared by the hosts/co-hosts and the videos of any students spotlighted by the lecturer. Other than that, the students will only see the other students' names, their emoji reactions, and hear them when unmuted.
The Focus mode can be turned on and off during a lecture. For example, a lecturer can turn the Focus mode while presenting, and then turn it off when it’s time for a class discussion (e.g. in breakout rooms).
The host or co-host can enable the Focus mode during a lecture/meeting:
-
Click More... on the meeting toolbar.
-
Click Start Focus Mode.
-
Click Start to confirm.
The host or co-host can disable the Focus mode during a lecture/meeting:
-
Click More... on the meeting toolbar.
-
Click Stop Focus Mode.
When the Focus mode is enabled or disabled, all participants are notified with a banner along the top of the video window.
Share screen to breakout rooms
It is now possible for the host or co-host to share their screen from the main session directly into all open breakout rooms [PDF]. This allows the lecturer to share visual information to all breakout rooms at once, guiding the students on the next steps or tasks.
The host or co-host can share screens to breakout rooms:
-
Click Share Screen in the meeting controls.
-
Enable the Share to breakout rooms option along the bottom of the share window.
-
Choose what you would like to share, including an entire screen, a specific open program, or others.
-
Click Share. The selected content will be shared with all breakout rooms. Any active shares in any breakout rooms will be interrupted for the host's/co-host's shared screen. Annotation or whiteboarding is saved before the host's shared content is viewed.
