What's new in Melitensia
Melitensia's Resource of the month – September 2024
, 1940-1942 written by Dennis A. Castillo, and published by Lexington Books.
The Santa Marija Convoy (also known as Operation Pedestal) was a pivotal event in Malta’s history during the Second World War. Malta’s strategic location in the central Mediterranean made it a critical base for British forces, but it also subjected the island to relentless bombardment and severe shortages, pushing the population to the brink of starvation. In his book, Dennis Castillo explores the extraordinary resilience of the Maltese people, deeply rooted in their Catholic faith, who were rewarded for it when five of the fourteen Santa Marija Convoy ships reached the Grand Harbour with desperately needed supplies. Through a blend of published histories, personal interviews, and oral accounts, Castillo captures the convoy’s profound impact on both the war’s outcome and the spirit of the Maltese people.
