Eight years have passed since the launch of the BSc (Hons) Medical Biochemistry. The course offers students an opportunity to learn through theory and practical sessions, in the areas of DNA technology, molecular genetics, protein chemistry, cell-signalling, cancer biology, haematology, immunology, neuroscience, bioinformatics, drug design, molecular pharmacology, embryology, scientific writing, presentation skills, how to set up and market a business venture. Those students who obtain this degree with a classification of second class honours or better may pursue a Masters or a PhD programme or apply for entry to the Doctor of Medicine and Surgery course.
This has been an exciting period for the staff and students alike. For seven months, the Fulbright Professor Kevin Ahern and Dr Indira Rajagopal from Oregon State University contributed to programme. Quoting Prof Ahern "the caliber of students in the program was equal to or better than those of our own students at Oregon State University. We did not expect that, to see such excellent training of students in a new major and it was the professional highlight of our stay.”
We were also honoured that Prof. Sheena Radford FRS and Prof. David Smith NTF (member of the Board of Trustees of the Biochemical Society) agreed to serve as external examiners – Prof. Sheena Radford said “Regarding the quality of the students, they included some of the best I have seen both within my own University and in others I have served as external examiner (York, Oxford, amongst others”, and Prof. Smith commented “The Medical Biochemistry course at the University of Malta continues to be a high-quality, research-led programme that delivers strong academic and professional training in the biosciences. The curriculum is comprehensive and well-aligned with current scientific and industry needs".
We are especially proud of the successes of our students and alumni and the way they have embraced science.
“There are also several opportunities where you can translate theory into practice, preparing you better for the future. This course was a very strong basis for my MSc in Forensic Science,” Anne Grima, 2023.
"Beyond the academic content, what truly sets this course apart is the people. The lecturers become mentors and friends, and the entire experience feels like being part of a second family. I look back at those years as some of the best of my life; full of learning, fascination, growth, and discovery". Deborah Warrington, 2020.
“it has been one of the best decisions of my life”, Julian Coppini.
"This course has inspired me to pursue medical research in the field of genomics”, Maya Zammit, 2025.
"I highly recommend this course to any prospective students who want to make a meaningful impact in the field", Sephora Galea, 2022.
"This breadth of knowledge opens doors to a wide variety of career paths, from postgraduate study and academic research to industrial or clinical roles, as well as opportunities in scientific business, marketing, and even regulatory or legislative work.", Abigail Dalli, 2020.
