What's new in Melitensia

Melitensia's book of the month – March 2026

: Their Story and Voyage written by Hélène Le Meaux and Sharon Sultana; published by Heritage Malta.

Published in 2024 in connection with the 2024–2025 temporary exhibition of the same title at the National Museum of Archaeology, this book recounts the history and journey of the exquisite pedestalled candelabra known as the Cippi of Malta. These marble pillars, dating to the second century BC, feature bilingual inscriptions in Phoenician and Greek—originally dedicated as votive offerings to the Phoenician god Melqart. In the late eighteenth century, one of the Cippi was gifted to France, by the Order of St. John, and eventually became part of the Louvre Museum collections, while the other remained in Malta at the National Museum of Archaeology. Their modern reunions—first at the Louvre Abu Dhabi and later in Malta—offer the narrative of the publication, illustrating the significance of Maltese heritage within a context of international cultural exchange.

The list of new Melitensia acquisitions is available online.
