Prof. Maria Cordina from the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, UM, teamed up with Dr Lorna Bonnici West, Director of Research and Innovation at MCAST to organise a 4-day seminar on Enhancing Safety through Organisational Culture in Medication Practices as part of the Safe Meds project funded by , through the Research Networking Scheme.
The event, held between the 13 to 16 October 2025, was led by Professor Timothy Chen from the University of Sydney, Australia and Professor Shane Desselle from University of Touro, USA, both eminent scholars in the field.
Students reading for a B.Sc. (Hons.) in Pharmacology from the University of Malta joined students from MCAST to follow presentations and engage in interactive workshops on the role of organisational culture in promoting safer medication practices lead by Professors Chen and Desselle. Post-graduate students also had the opportunity to individually discuss their ongoing research and receive constructive feedback from these highly experienced international scholars.
A highlight of the seminar was the session on, “The Role of Organisational Culture in Medication Safety”, primarily organised by Dr Neville Schembri, which brought together diverse healthcare stakeholders. This inter-disciplinary event explored how communication, hierarchy, and collaboration shape safe practices, featuring in-depth presentations and networking opportunities among participants.
This event was a demonstration of effective inter-institutional collaboration and commitment to improving and promoting a culture for safer medication practices across healthcare settings through education and research.
Through this project, UM pharmacology students are participating in internationally collaborative research focusing on organisational culture and safe medication practices providing them with an excellent opportunity for academic growth.
