On Thursday 11 December 2025, Hon. Julia Farrugia, Malta’s Minister for Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector, paid a visit to the University of Malta Msida campus, where she met with 14 hard of hearing students who have embarked on a course that is being offered for the first time, that’ll allow them to teach sign language themselves once they graduate.
The pioneering course, the Diploma in Applied Linguistics, was launched earlier this year as part of a broader initiative to advance and promote linguistic accessibility, particularly in Maltese Sign Language (LSM).
This development was made possible through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UM, the (MIV), and the (KLSM), marking a shared commitment to fostering inclusion through education and training in close alignment with the goals set out in the .
The setting up, implementation and delivery of the course were generously sponsored by the Ministry for Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector (MIV), through the allocation of a grant worth €70,000 to the University.
