This September, ten students from Malta embarked on an enriching 10-day cultural and educational journey to China. The group was led by Ms Weili Wang, a dedicated teacher from the Confucius Institute at the University of Malta. This marked the very first youth autumn camp organised by the Institute since its founding, giving students a unique opportunity to experience China beyond the classroom.
The trip began in Beijing, where the students explored some of the country’s most iconic landmarks. From walking through the ancient Forbidden City and climbing the Great Wall to visiting Tiananmen Square and the tranquil Summer Palace, the group was immersed in China’s rich history and cultural heritage.
A special highlight of their stay in Beijing was the visit to the Embassy of Malta. The students were warmly welcomed by the Maltese Ambassador to China, who shared insights into Malta–China relations and encouraged them to continue fostering cultural bridges between the two countries. It was a proud and memorable moment for the whole group.
After three days in the capital, the students continued their journey to Xiamen, a picturesque coastal city in southern China. There, they participated in hands-on classes on Chinese education, literature, traditional martial arts, and the distinctive Minnan (Southern Fujian) culture. They also visited the scenic island of Gulangyu, renowned for its music, architecture, and cultural charm.
Throughout the camp, the students engaged with local teachers and peers, sampled authentic Chinese cuisine, and experienced everyday life in modern China. The journey broadened their horizons, deepened their interest in Chinese language and culture, and built lasting friendships.
The Confucius Institute hopes this camp will be the first of many youth exchanges to come—bringing cultures closer, one journey at a time.
