Monique: From Homeschooling to the Frontlines of Care

Monique is a University of Malta graduand, completing her degree in Nursing. Originally from Italy, she has called Malta home for the past ten years and, at just 25, her journey to this moment has been anything but straightforward.

She was homeschooled and focused mainly on languages, which at first made it difficult for her to enter university. Determined to work in healthcare, she redid high school in Malta. She initially aimed for medicine but eventually entered Nursing, where she discovered how much she values compassion and real connections with patients.

Monique believes strongly in community and giving back. She has always been active in volunteering, including in Gozo, and dreams of working with organisations like Nurses Without Borders, especially in places where healthcare workers are most needed. She is also the first person in her extended family to attend university.

As she puts it, “If all of us dedicate some part of what we do or perhaps our income to somebody else who needs it the most, that is what I care about.”

Monique’s journey in Nursing has been driven by service and empathy. Now graduating and hoping to volunteer with Nurses Without Borders, she is ready to make a positive impact beyond Malta.
