On 20 March 2026, the Department of French at the University of Malta marked the celebration of the French language, with a lively event bringing together its students and visiting sixth form students of French from Junior College and St Aloysius Sixth Form. The programme featured a series of inspiring and informative talks by Dr Marilyn Mallia, Head of Department; Her Excellency Mrs Sandrine Lelong-Motta, Ambassador of France to Malta; Ms Agnès Marie, Director of Alliance Française de Malte Méditerranée; and Dr Jean-Claude Cachia from the Institute for European Studies at the University of Malta. Their contributions highlighted the cultural, educational and international significance of the French language today. A memorable part of the event was the presentation of creative projects by undergraduate students of French, developed in collaboration with the Embassy of Malta in France. Through a wide range of original work, students shared their personal engagement with French language and culture, while reflecting on the meaning of Francophonie in contemporary contexts. The event also included interactive activities and lively exchanges among participants, creating a convivial and dynamic atmosphere. The celebration was a vibrant reminder that French is far more than a subject of study: it is a living language that that continues to connect people, cultures and ideas. |
