The University of Malta’s inaugural Masters Fair, held between Thursday 16 and Saturday 18 April 2026 at Campus Hub, Msida, drew a sizeable crowd of prospective students who explored their future study options, while engaging in lively discussions about which academic paths to pursue.
This favourable turnout reflected a growing interest in postgraduate education and highlighted the University’s expanding appeal to the public, local and international alike.
The event offered attendees a comprehensive look at postgraduate opportunities available at UM. One of its key highlights was the opportunity for prospective students to speak directly with the same academics who would potentially guide them throughout their studies. This direct interaction allowed attendees to gain valuable insights into courses, expectations, and career pathways.
Student Advisory ¸£ÀûÔÚÏßÃâ·Ñ were also present, providing hands-on support with the application process, while members of the Student Recruitment Office organised campus tours in collaboration with the UM Library and several of the University’s Faculties, Institutes, Centres and Schools, which gave participants a first-hand look at the University’s facilities, including laboratories, lecture halls, libraries, and study spaces.
A series of informative talks addressed important topics such as the benefits of pursuing postgraduate studies, available government scholarships, and funding opportunities. Visitors were also encouraged to explore flexible study options designed to fit around different lifestyles and commitments.
Adding to the event’s appeal, prospective applicants were given the opportunity to submit their applications free of charge during the fair.
Commenting on the initiative, Deputy Director of the Marketing, Communications and Alumni Office, Dr Mario Cassar, noted that postgraduate study is increasingly becoming a viable option for a wider range of students. He emphasised that continuing one’s education is no longer limited to a select few, but is an accessible pathway for many, with the University equipped to support students through high-quality teaching and an excellent, diverse academic offering.
Current figures underline this upward trend. The University of Malta presently hosts 3,198 Master’s students, the majority of whom are Maltese (2,395), alongside 803 international students, including 356 from EU countries and 447 from outside the EU. These figures reflect both sustained demand for postgraduate education and the University’s growing international reach.
Taught Master’s programmes remain the most popular, with 2,622 students enrolled. These programmes are particularly favoured for their structured, career-oriented approach and attract a strong mix of local and international students. Meanwhile, 576 students are pursuing research-based Master’s degrees, which continue to draw interest from those seeking specialised and research-focused academic paths.
The University has also seen steady growth in postgraduate enrolments over recent years, with the 2025/2026 academic year alone seeing 1,593 new postgraduate students joining the UM community (compared to the 1,479 who joined for the 2022/2023 academic year).
This consistent increase highlights a rising interest in advanced study, particularly in professionally-oriented programmes such as Nursing, Accountancy, Law, Pharmacy, Architecture, Engineering, and Counselling, all of which continue to attract high numbers of applicants.
The Masters Fair forms part of the University’s broader efforts to position Malta as an attractive destination for postgraduate education, while reinforcing its role as the country’s leading tertiary institution. By offering programmes aligned with global academic and professional demands, the University continues to support students in shaping their futures through advanced study.
