On Thursday 8 January, an educational outreach event centred on French culture and language was held for all Year 7 and Year 8 students of French at .
The event was organised and delivered by Prof. Anne-Marie Bezzina Busuttil, Head of the Department of French within the Faculty of Arts, and Dr Jean Claude Cachia, Outreach Coordinator at the Institute of European Studies.
The session adopted a playful, interactive approach to learning, designed to spark curiosity and engagement while consolidating students’ knowledge of French culture. Through team-based games and activities, students explored a wide range of topics, including French monuments, famous historical and contemporary personalities, French geography, food and drink, as well as feasts and celebrations associated with French culture.
All teams performed equally well, with the playful competitions ending in a draw, reinforcing the collaborative and inclusive spirit of the event. Students participated enthusiastically throughout the session, demonstrating high levels of interest in both the cultural content and the interactive format.
In addition, students were briefly introduced to the practical value of learning French beyond the classroom. They were made aware of the wide range of career opportunities for which French is an asset, and of the importance of combining French or another foreign language with European Studies, particularly in view of future employment within European institutions and international fora.
At the end of the activity, each student received a book written in simple French, which they explored with evident interest and appreciation. Overall, the event was very well received, with students showing strong engagement, enjoyment, and motivation to further explore the French language and culture.
