Event: First Maltese screening of a film on the life of Sicilian ‘cantastorie’ Rosa Balistreri

Date: Wednesday 17 December 2025

Time: 18:00-22:00

Venue: Aula Magna, Valletta Campus

On Wednesday 17 December at 18:00, the Aula Magna of the Valletta Campus (St Paul’s Street, Valletta) will host the Maltese premiere of L’amore che ho (The Sicilian Storyteller, 2024), directed by Paolo Licata.

The film will be shown in Italian with English subtitles, in the presence of actress Lucia Sardo and producers Giuseppina Liotta and Maria Francesca Tona. Admission is free. Following the screening, there will be a tasting of Sicilian specialities offered by Cinema Nuovo Italiano, which curates the “Italia Film Festival Malta”.

The event is co-organised by the Department of Italian and the M.A. in Film Studies at the University of Malta, in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy, the Italian Cultural Institute, and Com.It.Es. Malta.

The film tells the story of Rosa Balistreri (1927-1990), the renowned Sicilian ballad singer who championed the rights of women, workers, and the marginalised, and who collaborated, among others, with the future Nobel laureate Dario Fo. L’amore che ho features a score by Carmen Consoli, who also appears in the film as a street musician accompanying the protagonist during her performances.
