On Wednesday, 5 November 2025, the Department of Maltese at the University of Malta will host the Karmen Mikallef Buħaġar Conference, which this year will take the form of three short talks offering different perspectives on Dun Karm.

Prof. Dominic Fenech will discuss the period between the two World Wars as a time of political and cultural transformation and awakening that helps illuminate Dun Karm’s poetry. Dr Simone Azzopardi will explore how the poet represents women and the feminine ideal within the colonial and social context of his time, while Prof. Immanuel Mifsud will examine how Dun Karm’s poetry, especially his political verse, constructs a discourse of distinction between “the self” and “the other.”
