Abstract:

This introduction will assist students in identifying phenomenological ideas (such as, intentionality, pre-reflective, lifeworld, wonder, bracketing, reduction, existential) and how these can be operationalised in research that is concerned with exploring lived experience. We will discuss some of the challenges of taking up what is a complex philosophical field. We will seek to answer questions such as, what distinguishes phenomenological thinking? How does phenomenology apply to empirical method? Some answers are suggested from one of the main approaches to undertaking phenomenological enquiry as elaborated by Max Van Manen. Examples will be drawn from recent projects, including phenomenological analysis of Zoom breakout rooms and using the Google Translate mobile app.
