This public lecture is being organised by the Department of Gerontology & Dementia Studies at the University of Malta.
About the topic
Europe’s long-term care systems are facing challenges as populations age, life expectancy rises, and family structures evolve. The demand for formal care services is growing rapidly, and at the same time, many countries deal with workforce shortages, funding constraints and uneven access to quality care.
The future of long-term care in Europe will likely depend on a mix of policy innovation, increased investment, and the integration of technology (telehealth, assistive devices) to support independent living.
Strengthening community-based care, improving working conditions for caregivers, and ensuring sustainable financing models will be essential to meet the needs of older adults while maintaining equity and dignity in care systems.
